Exhibition of works by Victor Popov
December 21 at the Marble Palace, State Russian Museum opens an exhibition of works by Victor Popov. The exhibition includes 47 works.
Viktor Popov was born in 1952 in East Kazakhstan, in a small town in the foothills of the Altai Mountains. In 1974-1979 he studied at the Institute of Applied Art in Lviv. Popov traveled to vast expanses of the Soviet Union: After graduation, he worked in Novosibirsk and the Altai, as a freelance artist designed the children's playground, built fabulous towns. To this period belongs his first contact with the wood as material. In 1984 he moved to Leningrad, where he met with the artists from "The Island". The ideas of a group of artists who have created its own version of surrealism, were similar to Popov, and he was in the late 1980s and participates in joint exhibitions.
Since 1991 the artist lives in Germany. During this time he finds a sense of freedom and opportunity to look at his art from the outside. Begins the next stage - a sort of return to equity, until not meaningful in the context of art, the experience of working with wood. Since the second half of the 90's he starts performing wooden sculptures, totems. Popov's work characterized the memory of hands, memory, carpentry work, memory work with a small, but wide open space outside playground.
The next significant stage (it lasts, in fact, to this day), has a tendency to create a series of powerful, hard shot down the wooden objects are attracted to clean geometrike. They fully comply with the formula of Russian Constructivism: a form of art is composed of two main things - material and design, through which the material is organized into a complete whole, acquiring its organic logic and inner meaning.
In parallel with the pointless spatial objects it creates assemblages - found-objects, which are involved in the real, "found" objects - baby dolls, telephone, reproduction, palette, etc.
Today, Victor Popov lives in Dusseldorf. Actively exhibited in Germany, Sweden, Croatia, Montenegro, New York, to Miami, and others
