The author portrayed a girl whose engagement was upset. She sits with her head lowered, concealing her gaze, but it's clear that she does not intend to cry about the wedding that was not held, at least in the presence of a second woman, perhaps a grandmother or aunt. Her lips are tightly clenched, and it feels that she is proud enough to do not try to change the situation and go cap in hand or make concessions.
