The canvas depicts practically an engagement, but does not at all seem festive and joyful. The girl who received the ring - "material proof" of the good intentions of the groom, is not very similar to a happy bride. Rather, she estimates the value of the gift and wondering if she could have expected more. The bridegroom also moves away with a head that is clearly drooping. Does he also understand that he disappointed her with a gift? Or that she will be unhappy always and for all, but love is evil?.. [Expand]
