The medea is going to kill the children (a canvas, oil, 1838)
Ferdinan Victor Eugène Delacroix was the follower of the romantic direction of painting of Europe and a little - is known to general public, as the illustrator of myths or portraits. A cloth "Freedom conducting the people" 1830, however "Medea" that was written to most of all familiarly Russian viewer by the author 8 years later after triumphal "Freedom" deserves attention of critics and inhabitants [
especially as the period of writing of work is closely connected with final recognition in society and creative splash in the artist not less.
"The medea is going to kill the children" was written by Eugène at forty-year age when the experience of his creativity passed in sixteen years, and its painting got the hardness, recognition and own accent. The plot of a cloth is so tragic, the technology of execution of work is how gloomy. Here prevail dark tone, a disturbing palette with abundance of brown-black tones.
Crude cave and the jealous tsarevna – the magician with helpless children on hands – a sad picture. Knowing a fate which comprehended innocent kids, there is a wish to delay the moment of their execution only that they were a fruit of love of mother Medea and the Argonaut Yason who betrayed feelings of the woman. As it isn't similar to maternal love and awe but as it is clear subjects who knows madness of jealousy. It zastit eyes to Medea, drives to a crime, conducts in darkness of rocks, gives the murder tool in slender fingers.
Eugène Delacroix allocated "Medea" with feminity, refinement and, reasonable alarm, unlike many other authors that draw mother mad and aggressive, full of affect and misunderstanding. It is thin calculation now, and after – a regret about deeds. Medea's children resist. The artist didn't begin to distort childish reaction. Their small bodies are innocent, bleached by light, are full of vital forces.
The younger son doesn't understand yet that cold metal will pierce his skin soon. It is similar to a pale angel, causing in the viewer fateful disappointment and melancholy. The gloomy subject of a picture will hardly decorate scenes of the small dwelling in the gravity of a plot of infanticide and a dark palette. Museum walls of Louvre – here that plane that maybe to store grandiosity of a terrible picture further.
The dramatic nature was always inherent in works of the author. Emphasizing with gloomy oil nature of similar works, Victor Eugène preferred expressional drawing, dynamics of the movement of characters to a languid dream and slackness of heroes. He wrote "backhand" and sharply that became the business card of its work.
