Although in most cases they are interchangeable, there is still a small difference in the use of these two terms. Denotes the physical remains of the Ancient Greek and Roman culture - monuments and sculptures, this topic was particularly popular in the XVIII century (Giovanni Paolo Panini, Francesco Tsukkarelli). Classic includes a stylistic continuation of the ancient tradition (Jacques-Louis David, Hiram Powers).
