Elisabeth Louise Vigee-Le Brun (1755-1842) Comtesse de la Chatre

Oil on canvas 1789

The female portrait of the 18th century was dominated by images of highly educated, sophisticated and elegant women who met the standards of femininity and beauty of that time. They were often depicted in chic outfits and jewelry reflecting their social status and well-being. Clothing was usually made of expensive fabrics embroidered with gold and silver, and jewelry included diamonds, pearls and other precious stones.

The features of the female portrait of the 18th century also included the use of bright and juicy colors in costumes and backgrounds, as well as the use of light and shadow effects to give volume and depth to the image. Female portraits often included elements of nature, such as flowers and birds, which symbolized female beauty and grace.

One of the characteristic features of the female portrait of the 18th century was the prevailing inverted S pose when the woman stood sideways to the viewer with one leg in the foreground and the other slightly bent backwards. This pose gave the female image grace and grace.

In addition, women's portraits of the 18th century often included elements of symbolic meaning, such as mirrors, which symbolized beauty, or chains, which meant loyalty and devotion.

Women portraits of the 18th century are treal embodiment of femininity, romanticism, airiness. Of course, this is mainly due to the fashion of that time for lush or drapery outfits, voluminous hairstyles, hats. There are also more modest, simple images of heroines, which probably foreshadow new trends in style, characteristic of the next, 19th century.
