Variety and numerous female portraits of the mid-19th century. suggests that their creation was very popular. Of course, many were created to order, and, probably, portraits were an indispensable attribute of a respectable house. But the authors were obviously enthusiastically devoted to this genre, creating canvases in a relatively non-standard manner. Some paintings by Edgar Degas show only the face of a woman, drawing all attention to her look and minimizing the role of clothing or hairstyle. [Expand]
