Characteristic features of the female portrait of the early 20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, the portrait of a woman became quite popular in literature, fine art, photography and fashion. Women were often depicted in the style of belle epoque ("beautiful epoch") using light, light fabrics and a round shape reflecting femininity and sometimes angelic innocence. In portraits, women were usually depicted with thin arms and legs, small facial features, delicate skin and a gentle smile. At the same time, portraits of women could reflect deeper feelings, such as longing, melancholy, and sometimes rebellion. They often embodied beauty, but at the same time did not conceal the complexities of women's life and the inequality of sexual significance. Some female portraits, especially in the works of expressionist or Surrealist artists, could also be unusual, fantastic, sometimes with a violation of the usual norms of beauty, which was not previously in female portraits.

In the early 20 century. the innovation of women's portraits are, basically, new styles in painting that depict heroines in a completely unexpected way. One of the main authors is Kazimir Malevich, who creates a variety of images: still tender and feminine "Sisters", already rougher "Peasant Women in a Church", with elements of geometry "Girl with Red Flagpole" or a completely abstract "Lady at the Poster Column ".
