Characteristic features of a 17th century male portrait may include the following aspects:

  • 1. Representation of the deified image – many portraits of men during this period were made in the form of heroic or sublime images. Men were often portrayed as military, political or religious leaders, highlighting their importance and significance.
  • 2. Characteristic facial features – male portraits often emphasized strength, masculinity and power. Attention was paid to expressive eyes, proportional facial features and a powerful expression.
  • 3. Displaying status and wealth – many portraits of men reflected their social status and wealth. They could be depicted in luxurious clothes, with expensive accessories or surrounded by objects indicating their high status.
  • 4. Symbols and Attributes – Some male portraits used symbols or attributes to express certain qualities or interests. These could be items related to their profession, hobbies or achievements.
  • 5. Skill and technical skills of artists – many artists of the 17th century, such as Rembrandt or Velasquez, were famous for their skill in creating portraits. They used chiaroscuro, textures and fine details to convey the realism and depth of the images.
However, it should be remembered that each portrait may have its own unique features, and they may vary depending on the place and art school to which the artist belonged.

Men in portraits of the 17th century are pompous and majestic. They are depicted in a way for to emphasize their status as much as possible, raise them, give importance. For this, different means are used - clothes, wigs, or simply the scale of the figure, as in the painting "Portrait of Anthony Charles de Liedekercke" by Johannes Cornelisz. Verspronck.
