Characteristic features of Oriental architecture in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries

Characteristic features of Oriental architecture in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries can include:

  • 1. Ornate and intricate designs: Oriental architecture often features elaborate ornamentation and intricate detailing. This can be seen in the use of intricate patterns, carvings, and decorative motifs in buildings, such as mosques, temples, palaces, and traditional houses.
  • 2. Geometric shapes and symmetry: Oriental architecture often incorporates geometric shapes and symmetry in its design. Buildings may feature geometric patterns, such as interlocking stars, octagons, or repetitive motifs, creating a sense of balance and harmony.
  • 3. Courtyards and gardens: Oriental architecture often includes the integration of courtyards and gardens within the buildings or as part of the overall architectural design. These spaces serve as tranquil and serene areas for relaxation, reflection, and connection with nature.
  • 4. Minarets and domes: Islamic architecture, which is a significant component of Oriental architecture, often includes the presence of minarets and domes. Minarets are tall, slender towers typically found near mosques, while domes are rounded or hemispherical structures that cover prayer halls or other important spaces.
  • 5. Use of natural materials: Oriental architecture frequently utilizes natural materials such as wood, stone, clay, and marble. These materials not only provide structural integrity but also create a connection with the environment and reflect the local building traditions.
  • 6. Emphasis on spirituality and symbolism: Oriental architecture often reflects religious and spiritual beliefs. Buildings may incorporate symbolic elements and architectural features that represent spiritual concepts or religious practices, creating a sacred atmosphere.
  • 7. Regional variations: Oriental architecture encompasses a wide range of styles and regional variations influenced by different cultures, such as Islamic, Chinese, Indian, and Japanese architecture. Each region has its unique characteristics, materials, and design principles that contribute to the overall diversity of Oriental architecture.

These characteristic features highlight the rich cultural heritage and artistic expressions found in Oriental architecture during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Oriental architecture itself is very picturesque, so the pictures depicting it always attract attention. At the same time, it is quite diverse, the authors, who pay great attention to detail, can enjoy drawing the mosque with all its patterns and ornaments. And minimalist artists successfully convey the atmosphere of the desert with almost sketchy works such as "Tombs Of The Khalifs, Cairo" by Richard Dadd.
