Edward William Cook
Edward William Cook ( English Edward William Cooke, March 27, 1811, London - January 4, 1880) - English painter, marine painter, graphic artist, illustrator, scientist, academician (1864) of the Royal Society of London. Born in a family with a long artistic tradition. His father and uncle were famous engravers, Edward mastered their craft from an early age, and already at the age of 18 he independently completed a series of engravings. In 1833 he began to professionally engage in painting, painted watercolors and oil paintings, especially attracted to the marine theme: coasts, ships, coastal architecture. He worked under the influence of the great masters of Dutch painting of the 17th century (first of all, Willem van de Velde the Elder and Italian artists, representatives of the Venetian school of the Vedutists Canaletto and Francesco Guardi. In 1837, E. Cook traveled and traveled to Holland, then to Scandinavia, Spain, France, Italy (Venice) and North Africa, subsequently repeatedly visited Venice and the Netherlands. In 1829 he published a book-collection of drawings and graphics on the marine theme "Sixty five plates of shipping and craft" In 1835-1879 he exhibited 129 of his works at the Royal Academy of Arts, and 115 at the British Institution. Edward Cook showed interest not only in painting, but also in geology, natural history, biology and botany (especially flowering plants), gardening. In 1840, he began helping his friend, gardener James Bateman, set up the famous Biddulph Grange Gardens in Staffordshire, with all the orchids and rhododendrons of this garden planned and planted by him. Cook was not only an artist and gardener, but also a scientist. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts (since 1863), the London Linnaeus Society, the Geological and Zoological Societies of London, the Society of Antiquities. In 1863 he was elected a member of the British Royal Society and became its academician in 1864. The artist's paintings are now mainly stored in the collections of the British museums Royal Academy of Arts Collection, Tate British and National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
